WINTER FEST 2012

The businesses of Garrett County, Oakland Main Street, GOBA will be bringing you its 5th annual Winter Fest event in the Town of Oakland on February 17-19th, 2012. The event will kick off on Friday the 17th with a Progressive Dinner (reservations required). The festival will really heat up Saturday, starting at 9 am and going through 7 pm, and continuing Sunday from 11 am until 4 pm.
Frozen Assets Ice Carving Company, with master carver Bill Sandusky, will be returning for his 5th year to show off his talents in ice carving. He will do five live carvings on Saturday and then the “Tribute” to Oakland on Sunday. Ice sculptures will be lit at night and on display until they melt...
On Saturday there will be many activities available for all ages. Kids will be able to take home a free personalized block of ice with their name carved in it! Other events going on in town include bowling with frozen cantaloupes, donated by Browning’s Foodland on a bowling ally made of ice with real bowling pins, sponsored by Electronic Diagnostic Center. The crowning of the “Snow Flake Toddler Prince and Princess will be held on Saturday, so make sure you stop at Marvin’s to vote for your favorite Prince or Princess,(prizes donated from Marvin's, Painted Cupboard, First United Bank and Jan Florist). Horse drawn sleigh rides through town will available, provided by Pleasant Valley Dream Rides. A snowman building contest will be held, so bring your all your gear and imagination to make your “snowman”, prizes will be awarded for the best snowman. In the event we do not have snow the contest will go on. So make sure that you bring what you need to build. Oakland Winter Fest will also have Crafts Vendors at three locations this year, Oakland Train Station, Oakland Fire Hall and St. Peters Catholic Church Parish Hall. An eight foot tall “Ice Throne” made out of ice will for you to sit and be the king or queen sponsored by Clear Mountain Bank, Laoc Coal is sponsoring the “Kiddy Ice Slide” this year for all the little ones to play on and enjoy. The Short Brothers will be at the entrance of M & T Bank from 1-3 P.M. brought free to you by Inn at Deep Creek.
There will be homemade chili specials being offered all weekend long at Dottie’s Grill and Wendy’s Restaurant and Get N Go’s own home made potato soup will be offered also over the weekend. The Oakland Trail will be open during the day and well lit at night! Perfect for a nice quiet winter stroll, cross-country skiing or snow shoeing.

MEET OUR SCULPTORIn preparation for Winter Fest 2012, ice sculptor Bill Sandusky will be set up at a tractor-trailer at the Farm Fresh Pavilion. Bill will begin carving 28 ice sculptures including a slide, frozen bowling alley and ice throne, all of, which will be placed downtown on Friday, February 17th. He will be working at the pavilion until the festival begins. Benches will be set out for anyone to come and watch. So if you are in town, stop by and enjoy watching an artist at work. On Saturday, February 18th, Bill will carve 5 additional sculptures through out the streets of Oakland; on Sunday, February 19, he will carve one more sculpture at the gazebo.
